Sandy-beach events in November and Decembert:

  • Surf perch and mole crabs move from the inner surf zone to outer sand bars during winter storms.
  • During the winter months, sand dollars lie down flat on the sand and switch to feeding on detritus on the sandy bottom (instead of sitting upright, on their edges, and filter feeding as they do at other times of year).
  • Many shore birds (e.g. least sandpipers, western sandpipers, dunlins) spend their winters on the Central Coast and are abundant on beaches and tidal estuaries.
  • Beach hoppers (amphipods) retreat to coastal dunes during stormy periods.
